Linux Assigned Names and Numbers Authority

The Linux Assigned Names and Numbers Authority ( LANANA ) is a central registration authority for names and numbers that are used within Linux . With conforming naming, name collisions can be avoided and interoperability within the entire Linux landscape can be promoted. LANANA maintains directories of names of installation packages , init scripts, cron scripts, device names and other things. It is part of the Free Standards Group and the Linux Foundation .

history

The Linux device list was created by Rick Miller in 1992 and maintained until 1993. In 1995 Hans Peter Anvin took over the care . In 2000, he founded LANANA for this purpose, which in addition to this should maintain other similar lists in the future. The name was chosen as an allusion to the IANA , the registry for names and numbers for the Internet . In 2002 the LANANA became the official working group of the Free Standards Group.
