history

Much like Cologne and London , Bordeaux essentially expanded on the left bank of its great river for centuries. It was not until the construction of the stone bridge in 1822 that the east bank of the Garonne, previously used for agricultural purposes, was opened up.

Another development spurt followed in 1852 with the construction of a terminal station , the Gare d'Orléans . It came to the incorporation of La Bastide, which by imperial decree of Napoleon III. on April 27, 1864 was confirmed to January 1, 1865.

As a result, La Bastide developed mainly as an industrial area and workers' residential area. From the 1950s onwards, it experienced a slow decline. The station was closed to passenger traffic in 1955, and businesses were relocated or had to close.

The immediate proximity to the historic center of the city with its façades on the left bank of the Garonne led to considerations to redesign and upgrade La Bastide. As part of the ZAC Cœur de Bastide , from the turn of the millennium on a planning area of around 200 hectares was renovated, 43 hectares of green space were created, university facilities were established and high-quality apartments were built. The former terminus was converted into a multiplex cinema .
