La Lega , in German "The League", is a popular Italian song from Padova , sung by the rice growers of the Po Valley . It is the symbol of the uprising of the farm workers against their masters at the end of the 19th century when the leagues began to be founded. The song can be heard in Bernardo Bertolucci 's 1900 film when the peasants, led by Anna, begin to demonstrate against the eviction of peasants who cannot pay their debts to wealthy landowners.
