La Parola del Passato
La Parola del Passato is a specialist journal in the field of classical studies . It has had the subtitle Rivista di studi antichi since 1955 (previously: Rivista di studi classici ).
La Parola del Passato is run by a management made up of Pia de Fidio, Gianfranco Fiaccadori and Valeria Gigante Lanzara. It is published in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Filosofici in Naples. The magazine has been distributed by the Macchiaroli publishing house in Naples since it was founded. It is published once a year and contains articles as well as reviews . At first the contributions were only in Italian; today contributions in other languages are also included.
Founded La Parola del passato 1946 by a group of scholars under which the historian Giovanni Pugliese Carratelli played a decisive role. From 1965 until his death in 2010, Pugliese Carratelli acted as director, since 2011 the magazine has been managed by the current three-person management.
The magazine got its name from a quote from Friedrich Nietzsche's Untimely Considerations : "The saying of the past is always an oracle: you will only understand it as a builder of the future, as a knower of the present." In the foreword to the first volume, the editors laid out their program that consists in promoting humanae litterae . This concern was put forward in a decidedly neo-humanist sense: The aim of research in ancient studies is not limited to mere erudition. Rather, the tasks of classical studies include, in particular, the promotion of a moral and aesthetic education in the spirit of Goethe . Within the framework of this understanding of education, ancient culture with its “classical” forms of thought continues to play a central role.
