The story revolves around the unfortunate fate of Mathilde Loisel, an extremely pretty young woman who was born in a humble background, who borrows a diamond necklace from a rich friend (Madame Forestier) for a ball and loses it during the event. Together with her husband, a civil servant, she decides to borrow money from friends and to replace the jewelry. Finally, she buys a piece that is very similar to the original, which she gives back to her friend without her noticing the fraud. For ten years Mathilde and her husband struggle to repay their enormous debts and become increasingly poor. When Mathilde, who was marked by the exertion, meets her still young-at-heart friend on a walk, she does not recognize her at first. When they asked, Mathilde tells her the whole truth and learns that the necklace she borrowed was almost worthless because it was made of fake diamonds.
