La República is a left-liberal Peruvian daily that was founded in 1981 by Gustavo Mohme Llona , a former member of the Peruvian Congress . The first editor-in-chief was the journalist Guillermo Thorndike (1940–2009).

The La República group, which is behind the newspaper and is also involved in other newspapers as well as the television channels América TV and Canal N, is next to the El Comercio group the largest circulation in Peru. Among the newspaper's regular columnists is the Nobel Prize winner for literature, Mario Vargas Llosa .
