La jument verte ( The Green Mare ) is a novel by the French writer Marcel Aymé (1902–1967) and was published in 1933. This novel was made into a film by Claude Autant-Lara in 1959 . Both works became a great success in France.

Summary

The story takes place in the second half of the 19th century in Franche-Comté in the countryside. In the village of Claquebue, “where nothing happens”, a horse dealer notices that a green mare has been born in his cowshed. As long as she lived and afterwards - as a painting - the wonderful mare became a talisman for the Haudouin family. From within her framework, she also witnessed the love life of the whole village and was even able to comment on the thoughts of the pastor, who does not miss anything. The plot unfolds against the backdrop of a divided province. Two parties are fighting over the violence: the clericals and the Republicans. The novel contains 17 chapters and is told in the third person, with the exception of a few remarks in the first person singular. These are the mare's comments.

The plot is based on a family secret that Ferdinand, the eldest brother of the Haudouin family of horse traders, carelessly mentioned in a letter. Her middle-aged mother would have saved Honoré's life, who had been persecuted as a militant during the Franco-Prussian War , with the presence of mind and sacrificing her honor by giving herself to a young Bavarian captain. The letter, however, got lost during the election campaign because of the negligence of the postman.
