A paint sludge discharge device is a discharge device for solvent-based and water-soluble paint sludge from the water circulation systems of paint spraying stands.

The so-called overspray that occurs when painting in paint spray booths (the smallest paint particles that are carried over the workpiece) is absorbed by the circulating water on the rear wall of the spray booth and transported into the floor pan of the paint booth. After a short time there would be sticking and contamination by the finest paint particles. To prevent this, inoculation with various additives (including the most important component, the flocculant ), causes flocculation and thus a rise to the water surface of the bound paint particles.

The so-called coagulate must be continuously sucked off the water surface by means of a surface suction system and a dirty water pump. This coagulate is then fed to the paint sludge discharge device (location of the device in the immediate vicinity next to the paint booth) and separated into paint sludge and process water by the paint sludge discharge device . This separation of water and bound solids is the function of the paint sludge discharge device. Sedimenting sludge parts are continuously fed back into the inlet water, so that the sludge floats permanently and the paint sludge discharge device is even self-cleaning.

The bound and discharged paint sludge is stored in special containers (paint sludge collection containers) for subsequent dewatering and then sent for professional disposal .

The clarified water, together with the dripping water from the paint sludge collection containers, is returned to the paint shop as purified process water via the return of the paint sludge discharge device.
