Bearing shell

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In rolling bearings, bearing shells serve to roll and support the rolling elements . Bearing shells are also referred to there as bearing rings or bearing outer ring and bearing inner ring. In some designs (e.g. tapered roller bearings ) the inner ring and rolling elements are connected by a cage, which some manufacturers call a bearing or assembly bearing and the corresponding outer ring is called a bearing shell.

Bearing shells are also used in plain bearings - but without rolling elements . An example of plain bearings are the bearings of a crankshaft , which usually consist of two halves.
