The Sandoval Lake is a shallow lake about 10 kilometers east of Puerto Maldonado in the Peruvian jungle region of Madre de Dios . The lake is an oxbow arm of the Río Madre de Dios . The average temperature of the 3 km long, 1 km wide and up to 3 meters deep water is 26 ° C.
The lake can be reached downstream from Puerto Maldonado by boat and then on foot on a hiking trail. Overnight stays in lodges are possible.
The riparian vegetation is dominated by the aguaje palm . The lake is surrounded by reeds and swamps. The fauna of Lago Sandoval includes many different species of birds, including guacamayos and cormorants .
