The Laguna La Picasa is a wetland in Argentina . It lies in the border area of the provinces of Buenos Aires and Santa Fe .
Hydrology
During periods of extreme drought, the area of Laguna La Picasa decreases to around 300 km², while the maximum extent is 5500 km², with the marshland, which is then traversed by numerous ponds and lakes, extends far into the province of Cordoba . The following areas are affected in the individual provinces:
- 2500 km² province of Cordoba
- 2100 km² Santa Fe province
- 900 km² Province of Buenos Aires
At the end of 2007 the open water surface, the water level of which is currently around 106 meters above sea level. d. M. , decreased to 160 km², which is partly due to efforts to control the water level by a pumping station near Rufino . The average depth of the lake is about 3 meters.
During a dry season that lasted from around 1920 to 1973, the lake level fell to 104.5 meters above sea level. d. M., the flooded area decreased to about 40 km²; During the wet period that followed, the lake level reached a height of more than 106 meters above sea level. d. M., whereby the permanently flooded area grew to more than 300 km². As a result, both the Ruta Nacional 7 and the Ferrocarril General San Martín route were flooded, and more than 100,000 people were threatened with resettlement.
