history

The story of the Laguna Playhouse begins in October 1920 when a group of theater enthusiasts got together. In the beginning, the events took place in private houses. The first major performance was Suppressed Desires , a play by Susan Glaspell . As early as 1924, the company moved into its own theater building, which was called The Playhouse . The building was on Ocean Avenue in downtown Laguna Beach.

The city bought the house during the Great Depression . In the 1960s, the Laguna Playhouse briefly held performances of the South Coast Repertory , which is now located in Costa Mesa . In the period that followed, plans arose to build a larger theater building that could meet the increased demands. With the support of private donors, the new Moulton Theater was opened on Laguna Canyon Road in 1969 . The old building was then torn down. In 1985, smaller extensions were built.

The Laguna Playhouse won a national amateur competition in 1987 with the musical Quilters . After this success, the theater sought to hire a professional company. The Laguna Playhouse has been a member of the Theater Communications Group , an association of professional theaters, since the early 1990s . The planning for the construction of a second stage in Laguna Beach has been underway since 2009.
