particularities

caused by landslide

The Lake Chalice is a small lake in Marlborough on the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

Nestled in the surrounding mountains up to 1,395  m high, the lake is located in the south-facing part of the Richmond Range at an altitude of 860 m above sea level. In addition to a few smaller tributaries, the lake is fed by the Goulter River, which rises about 2.7 km to the north . At the outflow at the southwest end of the lake, the river continues on its way. The Lake Chalice , which extends in a west-southwest-east-northeast direction, has a length of 2.1 km and comes near its outlet to a width of around 420 m. Its lake circumference is around 5 km.

You can reach the Lake Chalice walk from the west over the Goulter track and from the north via the Te Araroa Trail . The Lake Chalice Hut allows hikers to take a rest or stay overnight near the lake. A 2.6 km long hiking trail has been laid out around the lake.

geology

The lake, which is about 7 km northwest of the Wairau Fault , was probably formed by an earthquake caused by the fault of the Wairau Fault between 1885 and 2145 years ago. The earthquake created a landslide that dammed the Goulter River . Tree trunks that were found on the lake floor allow a corresponding conclusion to be drawn using the radiocarbon method .

Trivia

A winery founded in 1989 in the area west of Blenheim has given itself the name Lake Chalice .
