The Te Araroa Trail (The Long Pathway) is New Zealand's longest long-distance hiking trail and was officially opened in December 2011. It begins at Cape Reinga on the North Island of New Zealand and ends in Bluff on the South Island. The total distance is approx. 3030 km and is divided into approx. 300 sections. The construction work was organized by eight regional subgroups, the so-called trusts (Auckland Trust, Waikato Trust, Whanganui Trust, Manawatu Trust, Wellington Trust, Canterbury / West Coast Trust, Otago Trust, Southland Trust). In addition to the government, numerous volunteers and commercial partners have participated in the construction.
