Lake Hayes

Lake Hayes is a small lake in the Wakatipu Basin in Central Otago on the South Island of New Zealand . It is close to Arrowtown and Queenstown . The State Highway 6 carries on its south side along.

The lake was originally called Hays Lake after the Australian D. Hay, who came to the area in 1859 in search of land to raise sheep. The name Lake Hayes came up later , as its discovery was mistakenly attributed to a local original named Captain "Bully" Hayes .

Since 2006, the lake has suffered from algae blooms from the native alga Ceratium hirundinella , which colored its water brown. In 2009 there was no more algal bloom, scientists attribute this to the occurrence of the water flea Daphnia pulex, which is not native to New Zealand, in the lake.
