Lake Rotoaira is a small lake south of Lake Taupo on the North Island Volcanic Plateau in New Zealand . It has an area of 13 km².
background
Lake Rotoaira is one of the few privately owned lakes in the country. It is administered by the Lake Rotoaira Trust . A permit is required to use the lake for fishing and similar activities.
The lake is located in a trench between the wide volcanic dome of Mount Tongariro in the south and the smaller cone of Mount Pihanga in the northwest. Its natural drainage is via the Poutu Stream into the Tongariro River .
The Tongariro Power Scheme uses the lake as storage for the Tokaanu hydropower plant . In addition, extensive hydraulic engineering measures were carried out, so several other streams and rivers, including the Whanganui River, were diverted into the lake via the Otamangakau Hydro Lake and a tunnel was dug through Mount Pihanga to the Tokaanu hydropower plant.
