Lancaster Priory

The Lancaster Priory (officially Priory Church of St Mary ) is a church building of the Church of England located at Lancaster Castle in Lancaster , Lancashire . It has been classified as a Grade I structure since 1953 .

history

The church has origins in Anglo-Saxon times, but little is known about them. The abbey church (Lancaster Priory) that still exists today comes in this form mainly from the 14th and 15th centuries. A church founded by the Normans in 1094 belonged with the monastery to the Abbey of Seez in Normandy and the monks' income was sent to France . When England and France were at war, the proceeds were instead sent to the nuns in Syon , Middlesex . It was not until 1430 that Lancaster became its own parish. In the Middle Ages this parish reached as far as Lunesdale and Wyresdale and owned large estates. The church was redesigned repeatedly in the 18th and 19th centuries.
