Land of Darkness is a novel by Nobel Prize winner VS Naipaul . It was published in the English original in 1964 under the title An Area of ​​Darkness .

The novel was written during Naipaul's trip to India in the early 1960s. Although Naipaul found his ancestors' village again during this trip, the country remained alien to him . Neither his stay in the south of India nor his trip to the north, to Kashmir , bring him closer to the country. He remains alienated by the attitude towards life of many Indians and expresses himself pessimistic about the situation in India at the time.
