Land of legends

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Land of Legends (Danish: Sagnlandet Lejre ) is a 43 hectare “open-air laboratory” for experimental archeology west of Gammel Lejre near Roskilde on the island of Zealand west of Copenhagen , which was founded in 1964 as Lejre Forsøgscenter by Hans-Ole Hansen .

On this area, which is similar to an open-air museum , scientists have reconstructed several villages or settlements from different periods of history in order to be able to research the living conditions of the people at that time. These include a Stone Age camp, a dolmen , an Iron Age village , a Viking settlement and a 19th century farm. The reconstructions are based on scientific findings from archeology from excavations , but also from historical sources.

Originally only scientists and students lived and worked in Lejre in their project situations. They simulated the respective living conditions of the people in the reconstructed living spaces. For some years now, the educational aspect of an open-air museum has been gaining in importance. The homepage advertises atmospheric and exciting excursion destinations for the whole family, for schools, clubs and company outings. The visitors can observe the actors and become active themselves during longer stays. Activities such as grinding grain , baking bread or dugout driving are offered for children .
