Landover Baptist Church

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Landover Baptist Church is the name of a religious parody website from the USA .

The website is created by Chris Harper, who was expelled from the fundamentalist Liberty University in 1989 for a satirical contribution to a radio show about Jerry Falwell . This university was founded in 1971 by Falwell. Harper started the satirical website in 1998. It introduces a church in the fictional location of Freehold, Iowa , run by a dictatorial “pastor”. He rules a self-contained society with its own businesses, including the sale of rifles. Their extensive business is a reminder of the great days of the American television preachers . Fundamentalist church leaders are irritated by the fact that the published opinions and stories are taken seriously by many of their followers (see →  Poe's Law ). The anthropologist Christine Yano, author of a book about the fictional character Hello Kitty , also rated a parodic contribution about this character on the page as a sign of a “deadly serious opposition” to Kitty by the religious right.

Cabaret artist Deven Green also publishes articles by her fictional character Betty Bowers , a wealthy Baptist from the southern states, on the site .
