The nature reserve Büren-Wünnenberger Forests with 3687.88  hectares is located in the urban area of Büren and Bad Wünnenberg in the Paderborn district . The landscape protection area (LSG) was designated in 1996 by the district council with the landscape plan Büren-Wünnenberg. The LSG partially borders directly on other protected areas and on the district border. The LSG consists of six areas, including three small areas. The three large areas are the entire forest in the Büren urban area southwest of the Alme, a forest area south of Bad Wünnenberg and a forest area south and southeast of Fürstenberg. The Aabachsee is in the LSG.

description

The LSG covers areas of the forests of Ringelsteiner Wald, Leiberger Wald, Staatsforst Büren and Fürstenberger Wald. In the LSG there is beech forest, alder forest, brook-alder-ash forest and spruce forest. In the LSG there is a kerb valley system with streams, rivulets and spring areas. Meadow areas are also in the LSG.

Individual trees and groups of trees are to be developed into old wood islands through the forest. As an additional development and maintenance measure, former bunkers in the area of the ammunition dismantling plant south of Harth are to be converted into winter quarters for bats.

From 2018 there was extensive death of spruce after bark beetle infestation .
