The landscape protection area Briloner Kalkplateau and Randhöhen with 1657.78 hectares lies around Brilon . The area was designated as a landscape protection area (LSG) by the district council of the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2008 with the landscape plan of the Brilon plateau . The landscape protection area was designated as LSG Type A, General Landscape Protection. The LSG was designated as one of four type A landscape protection areas (general landscape protection) in the Brilon urban area. The LSG is split up into many sub-areas. In the urban area there are also 22 landscape protection areas of type B, outskirts, landscape character and 53 landscape protection areas of type C (meadow valleys and significant extensive grassland) with different requirements. The LSG partly borders directly on the settlement area of Brilon.

The landscape protection area Briloner Kalkplateau and the edge heights are mostly forests with spruce and beech. The agricultural areas are mostly used as grassland. In the LSG, especially in the southernmost and western areas, there are cultural-historical relics of mining activities such as tunnels, heaps and pings .
Protection purpose
The LSG was designed to preserve the peculiar landscape character of the Brilon limestone plateau and the surrounding heights; To secure the efficiency of the ecosystem against interventions and small structures that are interesting in terms of culture and history; to supplement the areas of the natural area that are more strictly protected by designation as a nature reserve as buffer areas.
Regulations
As in the other type A landscape protection areas, the LSG prohibits building structures. Construction projects for horticulture, agriculture and forestry, the public supply of electricity, gas, telecommunications services, heat and water, wastewater management or an existing adjacent commercial operation are excluded from the ban ( Section 35 (1) No. 1 and 2 of the Building Code ). The construction of wind turbines and hydropower plants is also permitted with a building permit. Initial afforestation and the new planting of Christmas tree cultures, ornamental twigs and tree nursery cultures are subject to official approval from the Lower Nature Conservation Authority .
