In the case of water pigging (mainly of the genera Triturus and Ichthyosaura ), land dress refers to the totality of the external appearance (costume) present during the seasonal stay on land. The habitat change leads to remarkable changes in the external shape every year.

The following changes can occur compared to the water load:

  • the body appears leaner, dull and inconspicuously colored,
  • the skin seams disappear,
  • the tail is rounded (more or less),
  • the skin is often dry, rough and fine-grained (otherwise smooth),
  • calmer in behavior and even afraid of water.
