The Lange Bruck (Long Bridge) spanned the Rhine between Strasbourg and Kehl since the Middle Ages . Similar to the Rhine bridge in Breisach , it used a Rhine island to cross the river and had a bridgehead on the opposite bank .

history

In 1388, the people of Strasbourg began building the wooden bridge over the Rhine. Over time, the structure was repeatedly adapted to the course of the river Rhine and the destruction caused by the annual floods in spring and autumn and in 1621 measured a length of 1,400 meters. During this warlike time, the bridge often fell victim to the attack of various armies or the fear of the population who tore the bridge down in order to be protected from attacks. The exact timeframe of the final demolition is unknown. Occasionally its destruction is mentioned in 1797.

On May 7, 1770, Marie-Antoinette entered her future empire over the bridge as part of her bridal trip from Vienna to Versailles . A pavilion was set up on the island, in which she was ritually dressed and received by the French court. According to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , who was in Strasbourg at the time, the pavilion was decorated with portraits from the story of Jason , Medea and Creusa , which Goethe saw as an example of an unhappy marriage and was therefore criticized.

From 1815 there was only a ship bridge . After the Rhine had been straightened in the middle of the 19th century, a double-track railway bridge was built from 1858 (start of construction) to 1861 (completion) and a road bridge in 1897 . Both bridges were destroyed in the Second World War and then rebuilt with a different geometry.
