Long-stayers (hospital system)

In hospital jargon, a patient whose inpatient stay has exceeded the upper limit of length of stay is called a long- stay patient .

The Diagnosis Related Groups (DRG) have been used in Germany since 2003 as the basis for payment for inpatient treatment by health insurance companies . The hospital fee is now calculated based on the severity of the disease, medical measures carried out and any complications suffered . The fee associated with a certain DRG should be calculated in such a way that it covers the average costs for the patients in this case group. A patient who is shorter than the average residence time is of the respective DRG in hospital, tends to cause lower costs for the hospital as a long Lieger , the upper limit of stay has been exceeded. This certainly applies to the so-called hotel services (i.e. bed, meals, laundry, technology and so on), but mostly also to care and medical expenses.
