Slot drilling machine with adjustable drilling unit

A slot drilling machine is a drilling machine for machining wood . It is used to create elongated holes and dowel holes .

A drilling unit and a receiving table for workpieces are attached to the machine stand. The drilling unit accepts long hole and dowel drills via a drill chuck . In one machine version, the drilling unit can be moved with hand levers in the direction of drilling and across it, and the height can also be adjusted with a handwheel. The drilling depth and the lateral path and thus the length of the hole can be adjusted using adjustable stops. A stop bar and clamping devices for the workpieces are located on the fixed receiving table. The other type of machine has a fixed drilling unit and a movable table.

Tools for long hole drilling are milling drills in different lengths and diameters with cutting edges on the face and on the circumference. They are used to drill holes and expand them horizontally to elongated holes by circumferential milling. Round and dowel holes are drilled with twist drills with a center point.

Elongated holes are used for connections such as mortise and tenons , or for pockets for mortise locks .
