Laplink PCmover is a Data Migration - software that was developed by Laplink Software. The software enables selected files , folders , settings , user profiles and programs to be moved and restored from one PC , operating system or hard drive to another. PCmover is recommended by Microsoft for migrating from Windows XP to newer operating systems after Windows XP support has ended.

Versions

Currently (as of June 2014) six different paid program versions are available, which differ in their area of application, their functions and their price. In addition, Laplink, in cooperation with Microsoft, offers a free Express version to simplify the migration from Windows XP.

PCmover Windows 7/8 Upgrade Assistant

PCmover Windows 7 Upgrade Assistant appeared in October 2009, a version for Windows 8 in January 2012. It allows a user to perform an in-place upgrade from Windows XP or Vista to Windows 7 . The software enables the automatic recovery of selected files, individual settings and applications from the old Windows operating system to Windows 7 without overwriting the new operating system. All compatible programs are installed and can be used immediately.

PCmover Image & Drive Assistant

PCmover Image & Drive Assistant restores a memory image of a Windows PC or a hard drive on a new PC with a different Windows operating system, complete with all files, settings and programs, without overwriting anything on the new PC, including the operating system.

PCmover Home

PCmover Home was released in May 2009. It enables users to migrate files, individual settings and applications from an old to a new PC. There are some restrictions: The old PC must not have more than one drive or partition , it only transfers the logged-in user, does not support in-place upgrades and cannot restore an old memory image of a PC.

PCmover Professional / Enterprise

The current version of PCmover Professional was released in October 2013. This version contains the functions known from previous versions: in-place upgrade from an old version of Windows to a newer version, migrations from 32-bit to 64-bit , migrations from an old to a new PC and restoration of an old memory image. The retail version of PCmover Professional (called PCmover Ultimate) comes with a data transfer cable and a copy of Laplink's SafeErase software.

PCmover Enterprise is Laplink's enterprise solution for larger PC migrations.

PCmover Express for Windows XP

Due to the greatly reduced functionality of Windows Easy Transfer by Microsoft, Laplink started in March 2014 in cooperation with Microsoft to offer Windows XP users a free data migration tool for a transfer from a Windows XP computer to a Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 computer. PCmover Express for Windows XP transfers files, settings and user profiles, but not applications.

reception

Laplink's PCmover software has been rated by various trade magazines around the world. PC Authority said they were impressed with the software as none of their files were lost and all of their applications were out of the box. PC World found the benefits of PCmover would be the software's ability to migrate data and applications, and the presence of a data transfer cable. However, the program cannot really perform complex migrations and the instructions would be unclear. PC Pro tested the "Professional" version and also rated the functionality and usability positively. However, the author came to the conclusion that the price for the software would be unjustifiably high if you didn't have to migrate a large number of compatible applications.
