The Largo de São Carlos is a place in the municipality of Santa Maria Maior the Portuguese capital Lisbon .

history

The square was created with the construction of the eponymous Teatro Nacional de São Carlos between December 8, 1792 and June 30, 1793, at the front of which it was laid. It is flanked to the east by Rua Serpa Pinto and to the west, accessed via stairs, by Rua Paiva de Andrada .

On June 13, 1888, the poet Fernando Pessoa was born on the fourth floor of the house on the north side of the square . A plaque commemorates him today.

After the proclamation of the republic , the Câmara Municipal of Lisbon decreed on November 18, 1913 the renaming in Largo do Directório . The new name referred to the headquarters of the Partido Republicano Português (PRP), which was on the square. On May 28, 1956, during the time of the Estado Novo , the square was given its original name.
