Superior laryngeal neuralgia
The superior laryngeal neuralgia is a nerve pain ( neuralgia ) of the upper laryngeal nerve ( superior laryngeal nerve ). It manifests itself when swallowing, coughing and speaking in the form of drawing pain in the upper larynx area , which can radiate into the ear area.
The following can be used therapeutically:
- Medicines: carbamazepine , phenytoin
- Neural therapy : repeated infiltration anesthesia of the nerve with a local anesthetic such as lidocaine
- Neurectomy of the nerve in the posterior fossa as a last resort in severe cases
The prognosis is to be made carefully. Even a neurectomy cannot guarantee freedom from pain.
