Lantern Festival Bad Homburg
The Lantern Festival is the largest and most traditional festival in the Taunus and has been celebrated in Bad Homburg since 1935 .
Every year over 500,000 guests visit the festival, which takes place at the end of August / beginning of September. The Louis Street offers a wide range of over 200 stalls. There are around 10 rides on offer at the fairground. A highlight is the move, which alone attracts up to 150,000 people. A large number of music and cultural events are part of the festival program. A greyhound race has been held since 1960 .
The special character of the festival lies in the eponymous lighting by lanterns. The lighting of the city center and the pageant is carried out on a private initiative.
history
The festival goes back to an initiative of the working group of the Homburg catering and accommodation trade, which wanted to create an attraction for the tourism of Bad Homburg in 1934 . The first Lantern Festival was celebrated in 1935.
The festival was a success and it was repeated in the following years. Paul Grützner composed his own lantern festival song, and from 1951 a lantern queen was chosen. Due to the war, the festival was canceled from 1939 to 1948.
Until 1972 the festival was carried out by the spa and tourist association. Since 1973 the association for the promotion and organization of the Bad Homburg Lantern Festival e. V. the lead management.
Lantern Festival Fountain
The lantern festival fountain designed by Harry Freder on the market square in Bad Homburg has been a reminder of the lantern festival since 1979.
