Latinitas (foundation)
The Latinitas Foundation was founded in 1976 by Pope Paul VI. created with the letter Romani sermonis and pursued the following goals:
- Study of the Latin language
- Promote the use of the Latin language through different means:
- Publication of the Latinitas magazine
- Realization of the “Certamen Vaticanum” competition in Latin poetry
- Latin language courses (language of instruction is Latin)
- Organization of lectures and discussions
- Publication of the Lexicon recentis latinitatis , a dictionary with over 15,000 Latin translations of terms used today
- Implementation of “Latin” vacations
The foundation was supported by the church, but fulfilled a cultural task that was beneficial to the general public. Its first president, Karl Egger , remained in office until 1997. His successor was Anacleto Pavanetto , who headed the foundation until 2008; the last president until the dissolution in 2012 was Antonio Salvi . As a direct successor institution, Pope Benedict XVI founded in the same year . the Pontifical Academy for the Latin Language .
