Running direction
Direction of movement generally refers to the direction or position information resulting from a - possibly only imaginary - movement; the term is usually only used when one of two possible directions is given.

With industrially produced paper is the machine direction (engl .: machine direction , abbreviated as MD) is the direction in which the pulp fibers are preferably aligned.
The fibers float freely during paper production and increasingly align themselves with the direction of production of the paper web. As a result, the finished paper can later be bent more easily on the side parallel to the grain than on the other. For the production of magazines and books, the direction of travel must always be parallel to the spine of the book, otherwise the pages can be turned very difficult. Only with reference materials for files and ring binders is it correct across the spine of the book.

Writing system
The direction of writing (the direction of writing ) runs from left to right (or from right to left) and from top to bottom (or from bottom to top). This can not only mean individual rows or columns, but also text columns or table cell arrangements. See also zigzag and bustrophedon .

In technology, the term describes, among other things, the direction of rotation in gears and freewheels (forward, reverse), the direction of rotation clockwise or counterclockwise, the direction of rotation of tires, etc.
