The Laugavegur [ løyːɣaˌvɛɣʏr̥ ] is the main shopping street in downtown Reykjavik .

History and meaning

The Laugavegur was laid out in 1885 by decision of the city council. The name roughly means washing path , as it runs in the direction of the hot thermal springs in Laugardalur , where in earlier times the laundry was carried for washing. In the course of its history, the shopping street has changed several times due to economic changes, especially due to the increasing popularity of larger shopping centers outside of it, such as Kringlan or Smáralind . Today, Laugavegur is home to more exclusive shops and souvenir shops.

Laugavegur is Reykjavík's nightlife district; There are various restaurants, bars and clubs here. The Icelandic Phallological Museum is also in the street .
