Lauratal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lauratal (formerly: Laurathal) is the name of the valley of the Scherzach between Schlier and Weingarten .

Origin of name

Laural spirits of the Plätzler guild

The origin of the name Lauratal is not clear. It could be derived from Luren or Lauren (forest spirits), or from lure (deceiver) or lur (ambush). The latter thesis is supported by the assumption that robber barons lived on Wildeneck Castle towards the end of the knightly era , and that they occasionally attacked merchants who traveled through the Lauratal.

The locals associate the name with the legendary figure of a knight's maiden Laura. The active group of the “Lauratalgeister” of the Weingartener Plätzlerzunft in the Swabian-Alemannic Fastnet goes back to the legend. The Laurasage was also performed as a play at the Welfentheater at the 2014 Weingarten Welfenfest.

Castles

In earlier times there were castles on both sides of the Laura valley: on the east side, below Zundelbach, the Wildeneck Castle and on the west side, not far from the former, the Haslachburg . A few remains of the wall can still be seen from Wildeneck, but one can only guess at a wall from Haslachburg. Today the Barbarossa Stone stands at its former location .
