The Swiss Accreditation Service SAS ( French Service d'accréditation suisse SAS , Italian Servizio di accreditamento svizzero SAS ) is a federal authority of the Swiss Confederation . It assesses and accredits so-called conformity assessment bodies ( bdt. ) - laboratories, inspection and certification bodies - based on international standards .
The SAS implements these standards in the individual specialist areas in Switzerland, together with the interested parties. She represents Switzerland's interests in international organizations that deal with accreditation, testing and conformity assessment .
The Swiss accreditation system is intended to create a transparent and competent infrastructure of conformity assessment bodies in all specialist areas in Switzerland. The SAS also creates the basis for the international recognition of reports and certificates from Switzerland. It represents Swiss interests within international organizations such as European cooperation for Accreditation (EA), International Accreditation Forum (IAF) and International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC).
The SAS has been part of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs SECO since April 1, 2006. Before that, it was with the Federal Office for Metrology and Accreditation , which since then has only been called the Federal Institute for Metrology METAS . Its headquarters are in Bern.
