Laurin & Klement Type 1 was the first Austrian motorcycle . The first series-produced machines from the manufacturer Laurin & Klement from Jungbunzlau (today Mladá Boleslav ) of the type 1 1/4 and type 1 3/4 were presented to the press on November 11, 1899.

Development and technology

From 1897 onwards, De Dion-Bouton and the Werner brothers' motor vehicles were very popular. Klement traveled to Paris to study the products on the spot; he bought a Werner two-wheeler to test it out. The improvements that Laurin & Klement made, the change from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive with leather belts and the motor no longer integrated into the steering head but into the frame, were adopted by the Werner brothers in their successor model (1901).

The type 1 1/4 had a 184 cm³ displacement (60 mm bore, 65 mm stroke) large air-cooled single-cylinder engine . The type designation was also the power rating (1.25  hp ). The type 1 3/4 had a 211 cm³ engine (62 mm bore, 70 mm stroke) and made 1.75 hp. The replica Werner engines with controlled exhaust valve and automatic intake valve were equipped with electrical detonation ignition and reached a speed of 1200 min −1

With further development and sales, things quickly picked up after the turn of the century. Success in motorcycle races in particular contributed to the success of Laurin & Klement's motorcycles. Laurin & Klement had produced around 3,000 motorcycles by 1914.
