Foundation and company history
The company was founded by the Basel bakery master Leopold Schöffler in Murten in 1939 . Schöffler was known as a specialist in long-life baked goods. Some of his training took place in Germany and Northern Europe, where he got to know the crispbread . In 1939 the production of crispbread started, in 1941 that of rusk . In 1949 the company founder Leopold Schöffler died and his son Heinz Schöffler took over the company management. He started in the same year with the production of pretzels , 1951 were pretzels made. Initially, the pretzels were still made by hand, but this was soon replaced by machine production. See also: Looping technique for pretzel .
In 1978 the company was taken over by Sandoz . Whole-grain rusks were added to the range in 1981, shortly afterwards rusks without granulated sugar. In 1995, after 5 years of planning and construction, a new factory was inaugurated. In 1998, Sandoz sold the company to Valora . In 2008 the Vaudois company Cornu SA took over Roland Murten AG.
