The Le Morne Brabant is a 556 meter high mountain on the peninsula in the southwest of Mauritius . At the foot of Le Morne Brabant are sandy beaches made of coral sand . The mountain looks almost like a lighthouse due to its height and covers an area of more than 12 hectares. Many hotels have settled on the beaches around the mountain.
history
In the 19th century, large numbers of slaves fled to Le Morne Brabant. On February 1, 1835, a police expedition was sent up the mountain to mark the end of slavery in Mauritius. Many slaves misunderstood this gesture and fell from the mountain to their death. Since that tragic day, February 1st has been celebrated in the Creole Society in Mauritius as a holiday for the end of slavery.
In 2008 the mountain was added to the list of world cultural heritage by UNESCO as a cultural landscape . The rich oral traditions on the role of the mountain in suffering and in the liberation of slaves were also honored.
