Le Père Peinard was an anarchist weekly magazine founded by Émile Pouget and published from 1889 to 1900.

history

The subtitle of the magazine published in Paris was from number 21 Réflecs hebdomadaires d'un gniaff (German about: weekly thoughts of a cobbler ). It changed its tone in a populist, popular language and led mainly verbal attacks against the ruling political and economic system of the epoch. The topics varied around direct action , anti-militarism , anti-clericalism , criticism of oppression, the “ bourgeoisie ” and the “exploiters”.

Le Père Peinard was often prosecuted for his calls for direct action and his managing directors had to accept fines and imprisonment on a regular basis, but this did not prevent the magazine from appearing.

In 1893 the lois scélérates were issued, which aimed to ban all anarchist agitation. Le Père Peinard was particularly meant. The last issue of the first series appeared on February 21, 1894.

Pouget fled to London, where a series of eight issues appeared between 1894 and 1895. Pouget paid his fines and was able to return to France that year, where he relaunched his newspaper under the new title La Sociale and returned it to the original title in October 1896. The last issue of the second series appeared on May 1, 1899. A third series was published from January to April 1900, and in 1902 there was another poster by Père Peinard against electoral politics.

It was not until 1976 that Père Peinard's texts were reprinted.
