Émile Pouget (born October 12, 1860 in Pont-de-Salars , Aveyron department , † July 21, 1931 in Palaiseau , Seine-et-Oise department ) was an important representative of anarchism and revolutionary syndicalism in France.

Theory and political engagement

Émile Pouget combined anarchism with revolutionary syndicalism and, as a political activist and theorist, was a champion of direct action , the general strike and sabotage as a political tool. He had a significant influence on the syndicalist movement and the Confédération Générale du travail (CGT) trade union . His influence was not only great in France, but also internationally and especially in Spain. In his theory, Pouget referred to Fernand Pelloutiers . He founded the magazine Le Père Peinard .

Quotes

“The syndicalist organism is essentially federal. At the bottom is the union group, the syndicate, which is a collection of workers; on the second level there is the Federation of Syndicates and the Branch Union of Syndicates, both collections of syndicates; then, finally, at the third and final level, there is the General Workers' Confederation, which is a collection of federations and branch unions of the syndicates. The autonomy of the organism is realized at each level: the federations and branch unions are autonomous within the confederation; the syndicates are autonomous within the federation and the branch union; and the individual syndicalists are autonomous within the syndicates.
