The Leatherneck Magazine , or Leatherneck Magazine of the Marines is a magazine of the US Marine Corps .

History and content

The magazine was first published in 1917 as The Quantico Leatherneck on Marine Corps Base Quantico . Leatherneck (to German leather neck ) is the nickname of the Marines. It was initially printed in the format of a daily newspaper, but was then changed to the magazine format in 1925. The magazine itself has set itself the following goal: To be the magazine of Marines — yesterday, today and tomorrow . The layout and content should be specially designed for the soldiers' operations and assignments. A similar medium used by the US Army is The Stars and Stripes . As the official medium of the Marine Corps, the reporters and photographers of the magazine u. a. in service in the Second World War , the Korean War and the Vietnam War .

The Leatherneck Magazine reached in 2015 about 40,000 readers. In addition to reports and images, cartoons and other contributions by illustrators such as Fred Lasswell and Gordon Bess are published. The magazine is available both in print and digitally.
