Hepatomegaly is the medical term for abnormal liver enlargement (Greek hepar ). It does not refer to a disease itself, but rather an examination finding that has to be interpreted in connection with other findings.

Hepatomegaly can have many different causes, the main ones being:

A reliable diagnosis of hepatomegaly is difficult because measurement of the liver size is inadequate due to the variability of the liver shape. It is better to assess the shape of the liver, since with rapid liver enlargement the lower edge of the liver becomes blunt. Furthermore, the angle between the ventral and dorso-caudal liver surfaces can be measured in the sagittal section. With hepatomegaly, the angle is more than 45 °. Pseudo-hepatomegaly, which can occur in obstructive pulmonary disease, must also be excluded.
