Lebor Dromma Snechta

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lebor Dromma Snechta [ 'Lʴevor' droma 'ʃnʴexta ] ("The Book of Druim Snechta"), or Cín Dromma Snechta [ k'iːnʴ' droma 'ʃnʴexta ] ("The booklet of Druim Snechta") is the name of a compilation in Old Irish Language probably written after the 7th century. The name derives from the monastery Druim (m) Snechta (Drumsnat, County Monaghan ), where it is said to have originated or was kept. This monastery was founded in the 6th century.

The manuscript is lost; it is only known from later manuscripts from the 16th century in which it is mentioned as a source. According to Rudolf Thurneysen , the age of Lebor Dromma Snechta can be determined indirectly from the information in these works. It is considered to be one of the largest compilations of Old Irish sagas, with at least 130 reliable prose texts to be found in it.
