Lee Boon Yang

Lee Boon Yang ( Chinese  李 李 , Pinyin Lǐ Wén Xiàn , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Lí Bûn-hiàn ; born October 1, 1947 ) is a businessman from Singapore and a former politician and veterinarian. He is the current chairman of Keppel Corporation and Singapore Press Holdings . Lee served in the Singapore Cabinet from July 1991 to April 2009 in a variety of roles including Secretary of Defense, Minister of Labor and Minister of Information, Communication and the Arts. From 1984 to 2011 he was also a member of parliament for the ruling Jalan Besar party (PAP). He left politics in 2011.

Family and education

Lee received a Colombo Plan scholarship and studied veterinary medicine at the University of Queensland (UQ). He graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science. In 2015 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by UQ. He is the younger brother of Lee Boon Wang, a landscape painter, and Lee Boon Ngan, who married the painter Chua Mia Tee.

He is married to Yam Mee Mee and has one daughter.

Lee began his career as a veterinarian. From 1972 to 1981 he was a research and development officer in the Singapore Government's primary production division. From 1981 to 1984 Dr. Lee worked for the US Feed Grains Council as Assistant Regional Director and later as Senior Project Manager for Primary Industries Enterprise.

politics

Lee was first elected to the Singapore Parliament in 1984. He was appointed Parliamentary Secretary in 1985 and has held positions in the Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of Communication and Information, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of the Interior.

Lee was inducted into the Cabinet in 1991 as a Minister in the Prime Minister's Office. He was appointed Minister of Labor in 1992 (the role was renamed Minister of Labor in 1998) and held that post until 2003. From 1994 to 1995 he was also Minister of Defense. He became Minister for Information, Communication and the Arts in 2003 and worked there until 2009.

Lee retired from the Cabinet on April 1, 2009. He remained a member of the parliament of the Jalan Besar Group Representation Constituency (GRC) until he left politics in 2011.

He was named chairman of the board of directors of Keppel Corporation in 2009 after leaving his cabinet position. He is also the chairman of Singapore Press Holdings, which took over from former President Tony Tan on June 23, 2011 .
