Legends is a paid, worldwide e-mail played , turn-based strategy - and role-playing game that plays Fantasy worlds in several. Originally developed in 1986 in the USA as a mail game by Jim Landes ( Midnight Games ), it has been operated by the Welsh company Harlequin Games since 2002 . The licensee in the German-speaking area is SSV Klapf-Bachler OG , based in Graz . The letter game started there in 1990. With 386 pages, the current set of rules is one of the most extensive of the genre. The game and two modules received the Origins Award in 1995, 2004 and 2010 . In the 1990s, Legends was one of the largest German-language postal games. The lists were created with a dot matrix printer . The current version 3 has existed since 2011 (Germany: 2012).

The number of players was limited to 200 in the Postspiel (until 1998) and is currently between 30 and 60 per game. The total playing time averages around two to three years, originally up to five years.

The set of rules alone, without modules, consisted of over 250 pages in the print version; the weight was 1,800 grams. The price was 350 schillings plus postage. The current version 3.03, as well as the modules and tools can be downloaded free of charge as PDF.

Since version II the game has been played with the help of tools and graphic editors (Legends Position Editor LPE, Legends Turn Editor LTE ( Shareware )), which are graphically similar to an early 2D computer game. The game worlds are huge and consist of over 10,000 locations and thousands of characters and monsters. A special feature are flying cloud castles.

The submission deadline (ZAT) varies depending on the module and section of the game, but is usually 14 days, initially seven to ten days. The cost per single move / command is at least £ 0.07, in Germany 0.12 euros (originally 50–150 schillings plus postage). Since many orders are issued per game round, each round costs an average of EUR 10 (between EUR 5 and EUR 13.90). Other one-off and ongoing costs are incurred, for example for starting the game, for corrections, shareware / license fees for the tools and, earlier, for the evaluation, which is now 99% done by computer. The first 10 rounds are free for new customers.
