Leif Hasle (born January 7, 1933 in Copenhagen , Denmark ) is a Danish writer .

Life

Leif Hasle was born the son of the politician Henning Hasle , but spent the first years of his childhood in Aarhus in Jutland . At the same time as the Weser Exercise Company , the invasion of Denmark by the German Wehrmacht on April 9, 1940, the family moved in a great hurry to Copenhagen because of the father's political activities, where Hasle was responsible for the German occupation, the rationing and the steadily worsening political situation Denmark experienced up close. In the Danish capital he attended Østre Borgerdyd Gymnasium, which Søren Kierkegaard had also attended. After the end of the Second World War and the end of the German occupation of Denmark, he graduated from high school in 1951 and did his military service in the Danish fleet from 1951 to 1952. In 1954 he began studying at the University of Copenhagen and in 1961 passed the higher teaching degree in the subjects of religious studies and German. He completed his German studies at the University of Vienna from 1961 to 1962 and then worked for several years as a teacher at a grammar school in Copenhagen.

After the death of the fashion designer Vagn in 1981, he continued to run his business until 1991. Leif Hasle lives in Copenhagen.

Works

Apart from an early debut with a few poems in the magazine "Vild Hvede" in 1954, Hasle only appeared again in literature in 2000 with the novel Rejsen mod strømmen ( The Journey Against the Current ). In the novels Lad os bygge en by ( Let's build a city ) 2002, "Det telt der er vores hus" ( The tent there is our house ) 2003, "Den ottende dag" ( The eighth day ) 2005 and Mandeblod ( Mannesblut ) from 2007, as well as in his cycle of novels Syvstjernens Bånd ( The Seven Sisters Band ) , published in 2007, takes up the basic theme of the German occupation in different ways, examines its history and aftermath and paints a picture of Denmark from 1930 to 1950. His the last work was published in 2009 under the name "Gengivelse" ( reproduction ); Hasle himself does not speak of this work as a novel, but only as a text, a poetic rendering of a childhood. This text became the basis for one of two films made by the Danish director Claus Bohm.

The recurring biblical motifs as well as the recourse to a strongly pronounced symbolism connect the stylistically rather fragmentary paragraphs of his works in a poetic way. Not only does every single novel result in a self-contained concept, but all five novels combine to form a quintology that is not chronological, but whose individual components are linked in terms of content. Hasle's well-chosen old-fashioned and poetic language always remains clear and clear and therefore does not stand in the way of legibility, but rather helps to conceive almost mythical narratives. Hasle is currently working on a small novel entitled "Opstandelse" ( Resurrection ), which is set around 1980/81 and has the AIDS epidemic as its theme.

Movies

In 2008 the Danish director Claus Bohm made a documentary about Leif Hasle, which was titled “Tiden er Guds hemmelighed. En film om forfatteren Leif Hasle “( Time is God's secret. A film about the writer Leif Hasle ) was released and allows a deeper insight into both the life and the work of the writer. When giving the title, Bohm uses a leading symbol from Hasle, in which he takes up the concept of time, which appears again and again in Hasle's work. Simultaneously with the appearance of Leif Hasle's text “Gengivelse” ( reproduction ), Claus Bohm's second film about the writer was also released with the participation of the actor Thure Lindhardt.

Danish Proust Society

In addition to his authorship, Hasle co-founded the Danish Proust Society in 2002, and he is still an active member of the board. Here he also worked on Else Henneberg Pedersen's new translation of Marcel Proust's “På sporet af den tabte tid” ( In search of lost time ), which met with great media coverage in the Danish dispute with Proust.
