The privately run Leintalzoo is a small animal park in Schwaigern , which shows around 40 animal species in a natural park. The main focus of the Leintalzoo is on the reception and care of neglected animals. In the zoo concept, the individual animal and nature conservation come before species protection. Another focal point is primate husbandry, four species of monkeys with almost 50 animals can be seen. The zoo shows a total of around 250 animals of around 40 species. 50,000 people visit the Leintalzoo every year.

history

The zoo is on the 1974 in Ludwigsburg based Foundation for the ape enclosure back in 1985 moved its headquarters to Schwaigern and since then Foundation for the zoo in Leintal e. V. calls. The privately run Leintalzoo was opened in 1980.

Peter Geßmann rescued orphans in Africa in the 1970s and brought them to Germany. In Ludwigsburg, on a site next to the animal welfare association, other exotic species were quickly added that were given away by animal welfare or private individuals. A suitable site was finally found in Schwaigern.

In recent years a decline in the number of species has been observed, which can be attributed to the many overaged individual animals. The last bear macaque died, as did rhesus and barbary macaques . The last Sarus crane died in 2012 as a solitary animal. At the beginning of 2013 the last monkey bearded monkey died ; the Leintalzoo was one of the two institutions that maintain this species in Germany. Now the species can only be seen in Aschersleben Zoo .

Investments

The park is located between the towns of Leingarten and Schwaigern on a swampy area with natural lakes and biotopes, ideal for storks, herons and turtles. Many native animals also settle in the flower meadows, natural ponds, tree populations and wet biotopes with rare plants. a. Dragonflies, butterflies, frogs, toads, grass snakes and hedgehogs. Trees were specifically planted 40 years ago.

The main attraction of the zoo is one of the largest groups of chimpanzees in Germany, more than 30 chimpanzees of all ages live here together. You can also find gibbons, capuchin monkeys , mandrills , parrots , ibises , turtles , free-range peacocks and chickens and a pet area with mules, guinea pigs, rabbits, horses, ponies, sheep, goats and pigs.

A nature trail was opened after the adventure playground with natural floor and the vegetarian cafeteria. A pane of glass offers an insight into life under water, and visitors will also find an apiary here. This is also where the zoo's extension area is located. a. the extension of the nature trail. There is also a small box car track for children .
