Editorial (Waltz)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The leading article is a waltz by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 273). The work was premiered on January 19, 1863 at a ball in the Sofien-Bad-Saal in Vienna.

Remarks

The waltz was written by the composer for the Concordia journalists and writers association (today Concordia Press Club ) and dedicated to it. The title name refers to the main article (leading article) of a newspaper or magazine and is therefore taken from the genre of journalists.

The playing time is around 9 minutes plus minus a few seconds, depending on the musical understanding of the respective conductor.

In the book by Peter Kemp (see below) it is stated that the leading article was the first waltz by Johann Strauss (son) after his appointment as director of the Kk Hofballmusik. However, this contradicts Kemp's own statements and does not get there in time. According to Kemp, Strauss was awarded this honorary title on February 25, 1863, while the waltz premiered on January 19.
