Mission statement (flowing waters)

In hydraulic engineering, the model defines the condition of a body of water on the basis of today's natural potential of the water ecosystem on the basis of the state of knowledge about its natural functions. The model only includes irreversible anthropogenic influences on the aquatic ecosystem. The mission statement does not describe a specific remediation goal, but primarily serves as a basis for evaluating the water ecosystem. “It can only be understood as the maximum possible renovation goal from a purely technical point of view if there were no socio-economic restrictions. Cost-benefit considerations are not included in the derivation of the model ”(LUA NRW 1999, cf. LAWA 2000).

The development of such a running water model is, however, very difficult, especially in the plains and especially in traditional arable landscapes.
The original state of the water body, which was not influenced by humans, can only be partially reconstructed, and there are hardly any real reference water bodies left , i.e. H. Natural waters in the same natural area, from which the natural state could be derived.
The reason for this is that the anthropogenic influences on use in the lowlands have a much more extensive, massive and intensive impact than in the mountains.

In order to formulate the concept, it is necessary to record and define natural area-specific water categories. The guidelines for small to medium-sized flowing waters in North Rhine-Westphalia published by the State Environmental Agency of North Rhine-Westphalia : Water landscapes and types of flowing water offer instructions for the classification of the water body to be treated.

In Germany, a total of twenty-five types of rivers are distinguished; important parameters here are ecoregion (e.g. Alps, low mountain ranges, North German lowlands), altitude and geology (e.g. carbonate or silicate, rich in coarse or fine material).
