Lengede medal

The Lengede Medal was awarded to helpers in the Lengede mine disaster . It was awarded in 1964 by Ilseder Hütte AG, the operator of the iron ore mine. It is therefore not an order or badge of honor in the sense of the German law on titles, medals and decorations .

Lengede medal: front and back

The medal went to the fire and mine brigade , THW , DRK and other aid organizations , employees of the drilling and specialist companies involved, and sound engineers from the NDR , who enabled communication with the trapped buddies.

The medal is round with a diameter of 60 mm; it bears the inscription " Ilseder Hütte - Dank für Hilfe in Lengede " on the front and a stylized drill head with the date of the accident " October 24 " and the date of the rescue of the eleven trapped miners " November 7, 1963 " on the back.

The medal is housed in a cardboard box with a blue velvet inlay. The text “ We thank you for your selfless help in the serious mine accident in Lengede October 24th – November 7th, 1963 - Ilseder Hütte ” can be read in the hinged lid of the box .
